AI-generated images are improving every day. Teach your pupils these tips and skills in order to find out whether or not an image is legit, and let them practice different strategies.

Use Google Maps to check out the location of the photo. What street can this photo have been taken in? Do the signs or landmarks line up with where the photo is supposed to have been taken?

Advice your pupils to search in close proximity to the Eiffel Tower. They should be able to quickly narrow down their search, as there are very few places that provides a head-on view of the Eiffel tower with buildings on the side. The photo is unlikely to be from the west due to the bridge, nor south due the park area. Then they can enter street view and see if the perspective is possible to replicate.

This is the only possible street. It is quickly apparent that details like street lights, the details on the building on the left, and the short posts on the left do not match the location in Google maps. In addition, the right side of the street is completely different.

The image supposedly depicts celebrations after a football game between Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain.

How can we verify or debunk the events taking place in this photo? Which details can you spot that could be possible to fact-check? What does a reverse image search tell you?

Even if the pupils immediately recognise the AI mark on the bottom right, encourage them to keep investigating the image.

Several of the faces look very similar to one another, which is a common AI sign.
Manchester City seems to have won. Have they ever won a match against Paris Saint-Germain?
Investigating the date at the bottom of the image shows that these teams never played each other in 2023.
The watermark shows it's generated by Gemini.
The stadium seems to be seen from the inside, but the ground appears to be from the outside of the stadium.
There are several arms out of place, and faces that seem distorted and out of focus.
The confetti covering a PSG fan is disproportional.

Consolidation

Say a sibling or a younger school mate comes to you, suspecting an image is AI-generated. What advice would you give them on how to investigate the image?
