Who is spreading fake news?

The pupils learn about how fake news are spread, and who spreads them. They reflect on how they can help stop the spread.

Preparation

Review the pupil page and prepare to share the link with your pupils. Consider whether the pupils are to work in pairs or individually.

Guided practice

Introduce the topic of the lesson and the learning objectives.

  • Give examples of different agents who spread fake news
  • Discuss why conspiracy theories get more attention during crises

Share the pupil page with your pupils.

The pupils complete task 1

The pupils watch the film from BBC. They are encouraged to watch it twice before beginning task 2. They can watch it on their own devices, or you can show it to the class.

The pupils complete task 2

The pupils respond to questions regarding the film and write down their answers. They can do this individually or in pairs.

Consolidation

Discuss the questions from task 2 with the class. Finish up by retrieving the learning objectives from the beginning of the lesson, and let your pupils comment on what they have learned.
